Bon Iver
Fox Theater - Sep 24, 2009

Sadly one of the many things I've cut from my budget (thanks to the economy) is concerts; however, I made a special exception for this show. My sense was that it would be well worth it. The only time I've ever seen Bon Iver was at Outside Lands in 2008 -- at that time I had just discovered them and was so excited to see them live that I didn't mind the huge crowd and poor acoustics.
This Fox Theater show was exactly what I was looking for. It was definitely quality over quantity. With only one album they know these songs so well. Although some people complained it was short, it was the perfect length for a weekday night. Justin promised they'd have more songs for us next time. I particularly loved Skinny Love with the extra drums.
I must say, my favorite Justin sighting this year was opening for the Indigo Girls at Mountain Winery. He is completely obsessed with the Indigo Girls (See Pitchfork article) -- which I find totally adorable and amazing. He did a short opening for them and I'm guessing most of the people in the audience had no idea who he was. He then came onstage and joined the Girls for their last few songs -- including Closer to Fine.
Yet my favorite part of the whole night was watching him off stage. From my seat stage left, I could see him slightly off stage, out of view of most of the audience. Through out the Indigo Girls set he was rocking out -- clapping his hands and singing along. He looked particularly moved during Fugitive, his "favorite song ever" -- throwing his arms out and pumping his fists. It was pretty amazing to see one of my new favorite musicians so fired up about the ladies.
