Feist
Fillmore Auditorium - Jun 27, 2007

After seeing Feist and her boys perform at the Fillmore, if I wasn't already in love with her prior to seeing the show, I certainly am now. This lady's got talent, and a fantastic range, and style to boot. I saw the 2nd of two shows, amongst a sold-out crowd of mildly adoring fans (with a few hardcores tossed in), and Feist worked it.

She started out with Bjork-esque atmospheric vocals, and immediately transitioned into a harder rock style, then delved into slow, thoughtful, Parisian-summer-night-lounge music, ended with a rousing spiritual-esque "Sea Lion Woman"; etc etc. Songs that didn't stand out to me on the album were a whole different ballpark live - her energy and creativity took her sheer talent to a new level. If I'm using the suffix "esque" too much here, it's only because I had trouble categorizing her sound. How about surprising and awesome-esque? Her actual performance was certainly interactive and entertaining, she was good with the audience.

Not gonna lie - her band was badass, too. They played every instrument known to man, including some sort of keytar-horn thing. They were on it.

If I have any complaints it was that there were periods of the show which got very mellow. If you know her music, her voice often can and will carry a lot of the sound which, in this case, led to a period of calm that was a bit too long for my taste. You know when something beautiful sort of draws you into a lull? That's how I'd describe it. If you like her music to start with, though, you know this is inevitable, and I thought she was even more impressive live. And she did a great job of mixing it up at the beginning and end.

Am I being too positive? I think she'll be around doing amazing things for a while. Two thumbs up to the Fillmore show.
