Mates Of State
Cafe du Nord - Feb 1, 2010

I just love seeing Mates of State so much. You gotta do it. If you're married, or in a serious relationship, they will give you so much hope that you can still be cool while doing so. You can see them having fun - real fun - from the way he looks at her over the tops of his cymbals. Ah.
Musically, it's always remarkable how much sound they get out of just the two of them. When Kori is on (at a previous show she may have had a cold or something), she brings the house down hitting the upper reaches of those ridiculously euphoric harmonies. If you know the albums, singing along is joyous.
It's also interesting to hear the differences in their current songwriting compared to the songs off of My Solo Project that they played (Proofs, What I Could Stand For, A Control Group...whoa, that's a lot).
Jason's drumming is always incredible to see live. He seems to play so effortlessly but so big and so tight. Seeing them at a place as small as Cafe Du Nord was a treat. Thanks to Bandega for that.
