The Breeders
Amoeba Haight Street - May 1, 2008
review by cultofsuetodd

I'm unemployed. I can't afford to go shows. And Kim Deal neglected to put me on the guestlist, again! But free in-stores at Amoeba? The price is right.

Breeders fans positively adore Kim Deal. I stood overlooking the crowded store and those bright-eyed youngsters were in awe. I too have followed Kim's career, including that Pixies side-project, and I can't blame anyone for adoring Kim. She is adorable. She talks to the crowd in a delightfully unscripted way, as though she's talking to a small room full of friends.

She's the most famous person I know who has remained completely free from superstar assholedom. If I were dying of cancer (and god-willing someday I will be), my Make-A-Wish would be a hug from Kim.

While The Breeders are consistently inconsistent and delightfully unpolished, they still manage to rock. Opening with No Aloha, Kim, Kelley, and Co gave us a nice mixture of old and new material with the panache of well-traveled rockers, but the casual fun of a practice. They're not ashamed to play their hits or an Amps song; and when the familiar ooo-ahhs, drum hardware tinkles, and sliding bass line of Cannonball sparsely floated across the store, I got chills.

Kim Deal, will you marry me?
