Which side of the Beatles do you land?
It's hard to be pop these days without a gimmick. In the '90s, guitar-based alt-pop bands could comfortably rest on a tidy fanbase of kids who didn't require lofty messages, overt experimentation, or waves of distortion in their music. These pop-rockers would even catch the occasional Buzz Clip from that cable channel that used to play music.
Then twee came along and Scottish pop icons Teenage Fanclub were replaced by the "sensitiver" and "acousticer" Scots, Belle & Sebastian. That's fine. I love BS! But part of me misses the electric guitars that jingle-jangle-jingle.
Enter the Crazies Will Destroy You. Scene: Annie's Social Club. After terrific sets by Cult of Sue Todd and the Roman Numerals, the Crazies had a tough task ahead of them. But this band is so f-ing cute, it hurts. The bouncey boy-girl vocals and unashamed synchronized jumping on stage...oh lord, I just want to crush them like puppies.
You can really see how thoroughly they are enjoying themselves and it's contagious. Even though I admittedly wasn't thrilled by the songs on their myspace, I couldn't stop bouncing to what can only be described as "ditties" at their live show.
You really can't judge them until you see them live. And you still shouldn't, because the Crazies would never judge you. The Crazies will be your friends. The Crazies won't hurt you. They won't make fun of you or tease you. They are so gloriously geeky that you'll only want to share cake with them.
Personally, I think they should change their name to "The Crazies Will Snuggle You".
