Bandega Interview with Amy Millan (September 2009)

Torquil makes bank loans romantic.

Q: How have your shows changed over the years? Has your perspective on performing live changed?
A: Things have changed so dramatically with the live shows, especially in Stars. We didn't even have a drummer in the beginning - we had a sequencer that played beats. We called him Stevie. I used to play only acoustic guitar. Now the lights, the stage, the instruments, the sound has become a true spectacle. The perspective hasn't changed though. It was always and still is about trying to take people out of their worries and into their lives for a few hours.

Q: Describe the most memorable live show you've played.
A: That's difficult. Over seven years there have been so many - and you don't specify 'memorable good' or 'memorable bad'. Good: Broken Social Scene just had a show where all the original characters were present in the home where BSS was born, Toronto. To add sugar, the show was outside by the water and it was free. That is one that will make for far away eyes when I think about it as a grey-haired grandma. Bad: Stars opening up for Evan Dando in Malmo, Sweden in front of only the bar staff, one of whom yelled out 'Freebird'. That was pretty grim. We called ourselves 'Teenage Moustache' that night. That is one I am still trying to forget.

Q: What venue do you consider to be your "home", where you feel most comfortable, with the crowd and the place itself?
A: Stars had the most amazing home town welcome at the last show of the 'In Our Bedroom' touring cycle at Metropolis in Montreal. There is a huge space in the basement to throw a great after party and so many of our good friends came out. It took us so long to puncture Montreal, and when we sold out the Metropolis, we were so grateful to the place we call home.

Q: Describe the most enjoyable show you've ever experienced as a fan.
A: The first month I joined Stars, Torquil took out a bank loan so he could bring us to England to play two shows. He's a romantic like that. Our good friends Emily and James of Metric were living there at the time and we all went to see Primal Scream at Brixton Academy. It was epic, it felt like everything was just starting and it turns out, it was.

Q: What are you most excited about, with the release of Masters of the Burial?
A: Having the mando player in the band, Dan Whiteley, make me laugh until my stomach hurts every single day on tour.
