Having received Suzuki method training to learn the violin, Andrew Bird has taken musicianship seriously since the age of four. His expertise and deep understanding of music composition also comes from his higher education, during which he worked to achieve his BA for the violin at Northwestern University in his home state of Illinois.

Bird's initial band, coined Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire from the late 1990s and early 2000s released a few albums. However, when the rest of the group refused to open up for the band of Bird's friend, he decided to go at it alone. His surprisingly successful performance at that show introduced him to the concept of seriously working as a solo artist.

Bird has tried the solo thing before. Before his participation in Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, he released a solo album right after he graduated from Northwestern in 1996. He called this album Music of Hair. This album, more prominently that any of his later work, featured his violin skills and interest in the blues, jazz and folk.

Bird's second take at a solo career began after his work with Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire ended in 2003. Under this second solo act, he has released over 5 albums, and has worked with various other artists on his music, including Martin Dosh and Jeremy Ylvisaker. Since his earlier musical career, Bird evolved his style by adding various instruments such as the glockenspiel and his own whistling to music. His current sound is a kind of symphonic rock that can be both high energy and slower paced. His sound also has some pop to it, to create a pleasantly catchy style is utterly nonthreatening.
