Beirut

Beirut's sound is clearly influenced by both traditional indie rock and by some type of European folkish/Balkan styles. The cause of such an usual combination of genres comes from founding member Zach Condon's teen years. After dropping out of high school in his hometown of Santa Fe, New Mexico at the age of 16, he moved to Europe to live with his cousin. There, he discovered Balkan music, which he combined with his experience with jazz and rock to launch his solo act under the name Beirut.

That's right, Beirut began as Zach Condon's solo project. In fact, he wrote and recorded Gulag Orkestar in his room while attending University of New Mexico. Since his first album however, Condon has brought on about 10 more members to the band.

Beirut has also incorporated French and electronic elements into their sound. Beirut has been compared to Grizzly Bear, Sufjan Stevens and Devendra Banhart. But really, Beirut is much more European-influenced and electronic than all these artists. Beirut puts the electronics into Europe while successfully avoiding the discotheque element.
