Beirut's sound is clearly influenced by both traditional indie rock and by some type of European folkish/Balkan styles. The cause of such an usual combination of genres comes from founding member Zach Condon's teen years. After dropping out of high school in his hometown of Santa Fe, New Mexico at the age of 16, he moved to Europe to live with his cousin. There, he discovered Balkan music, which he combined with his experience with jazz and rock to launch his solo act under the name Beirut. Show Reviews for
