Out of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Justin Vernon began performing under the name Bon Iver in 2006. Before playing under the name Bon Iver, Vernon worked with a couple other bands, including Mount Vernon and DeYarmond Edison. Vernon, at one time but no longer wrote, performed and released Bon Iver's music by himself. He has been known to pass around lyrics to his concert audiences to sing along to, in order to give his songs the same vocal fullness as his recordings. Before Michael Noyce, Matthew McCaughan and Sean Carey joined the band, Vernon recorded Bon Iver's 2007 debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago while living alone in a cabin in rural Wisconsin.

As a group, Bon Iver makes folk indie rock that is anything but mono-toned. Since the widespread enthusiasm for For Emma, Forever Ago, Bon Iver has experienced growing success; they participated in the soundtracks to One Tree Hill and Grey's Anatomy, performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, and experienced even more mainstream success than could be listed here. In other words, they've successfully translated their folk sound into an extremely marketable, fun-to-listen-to style.
