Broken Social Scene

As a quite sizable collective today, it might be hard to believe that Broken Social Scene was once a simple duo consisting of Kevin Drew and Brendon Canning. Drew and Canning released the band's first album, Feel Good Lost in 2001, but they deemed their sound ill-equipped for performances due to its lack of vocals. For this reason, Drew and Canning invited a few more members to join the band, including Emily Haines of Metric.

The particular number of members in Broken Social Scene has altered quite a bit throughout their years. Since their birth in 1999 in Toronto, they have deviated between six and nineteen (!) members as a collective. In addition to Haines, the band has included various indie mega-stars, such as Leslie Feist and Amy Millan of Stars.

Broken Social Scene generally creates indie rock that has a symphonic streak to it. Sometimes grandiose, sometimes extremely minimalistic, Broken Social Scene strives to play around with, and continue evolving their style. Their instruments often produce a discordant sound that can be both very beautifully ambient and harsh lo-fi indie rock at the same time--other times, just one or the other. They throw in just the right amount of slight catchy-ness and creativity to make their songs both unique and so easy to listen to.
