Iron & Wine

After spending some time with legendary singer-songwriters such as Elliot Smith or Nick Drake coming out of your speakers, you might wonder, "Why aren't there any great solo-artists like these guys, today?" Well, Iron & Wine might help you out with that one. Samuel Beam, who is the lone member of Iron & Wine, was born in South Carolina and grew up in agricultural environments--namely, on farms. It comes as little surprise then that Beam is drawn to folky and acoustic styles of music. Beam has a multidimensional artistic history, for he received his MFA in painting and worked as a professor of film and cinematography before launching his musical career.

Even though Iron & Wine consists of just one member, its style is anything but simple. Beam plays his acoustic guitar with incredible clarity; his talent for folk music is sky-high. Not to mention Beam's velvety voice that is both oddly masculine and boyish at the same time. Iron & Wine successfully places Beam in the group of renowned folk singer-songwriters, but in his very own way.
