Bandega Interview with Duffy Driediger of Ladyhawk (May 2008)

Duffy Driediger is not a skateboarder, but he plays one when drunk.

Q: How have your shows changed over the years? Has your perspective on performing live changed?
A: I would like to think that our shows have changed for the better because we are a better band now than a few years ago. I think we've all learned to hold our liquor better. A few years ago it was all about getting wasted and trying to play a show, sometimes it was great, other times it was just kind of sad. Now we're all a bit older and wiser (maybe), we still welcome the element of chaos at our shows, but we are less likely to fall down or vomit on stage. Playing shows is still the main thing about this band. Records are great, but I think we've always been a live band. We are still incapable of playing the same way two nights in a row. We're horribly inconsistent.

Q: Describe the most memorable live show you've played.
A: We toured with Black Mountain on our first tour ever a few years ago. The first show was in Minneapolis (meaning we had to drive from Vancouver straight to Minneapolis), and I was just really clueless about the whole touring thing. Anyway, we played at this legendary club that the Replacements and Husker Du and Prince had all played at, which really stoked my fire. After being cooped up in the van for two days I really felt I needed to blow off some steam and proceeded to get fucking trashed. No big deal, right? It's a rock show, just get wasted and play...well, I was so drunk I fell over on stage (as I mentioned above) and could barely play or sing - let alone both at the same time. The other dudes were pretty choked. But instant karma got me: after our set I decided it was a good idea to hop on a skateboard and "shred" inside the club. I am not a skateboarder. I instantly fell backwards into a bass amp really hard. When I woke up the next morning, my crushing hangover was made worse by what I could only assume was a broken rib. I somehow managed to play three weeks worth of shows in excruciating pain. That's probably one of my most memorable shows, even though I don't really remember much of it.

Q: What venue do you consider to be your "home", where you feel most comfortable, with the crowd and the place itself?
A: That's a hard one. I think my favorite place to play is the basement of the Knights of Columbus hall in our hometown of Kelowna, B. C. It's just a small space with trophy cases on the walls and shag carpet. It feels like your grandparents basement. We always used to play there in the summer, and it would be so fucking hot. There are always tons of stoked high school kids, people drinking beer in the parking lot...It just makes me really nostalgic for the days when I was one of those stoked teenagers watching bands from the big city in some crowded hall. Those are my favorite shows to play.

Q: Describe the most enjoyable show you've ever experienced as a fan.
A: Seeing Sunn O))) in an old shit hole venue in Vancouver. The place was completely dark except for the light from glowing amp tubes onstage. The sound was so massive, you could feel it vibrating through your body and through the entire building. Nobody was talking, everyone was just standing there lost in their own experience. I've never been part of anything like that at a show before or since. Granted, I was stoned out of my skull...

Q: Besides larger crowds (coming off the great response to Shots), what are you most looking forward to with this U.S. tour?
A: Seeing friends. That is the best part of touring, meeting amazing people all over the place and then getting to come back and see them every once in a while. Our friend Brad in Oklahoma City always makes us the most mind blowing barbeque. I can't wait for that. He rules.
