Neco Case was born in 1970 to teenage parents residing in Alexandria, Georgia. After receiving her bachelors in fine arts and having played the drums for various punk and country bands in Vancouver, BC, Case moved to Seattle to further pursue her musical career.

Case's musical career began with her working with The New Pornographers, for whom she provided some vocals for their debut album (which she did before leaving Vancouver). Initially under the name Neko Case and Her Boyfriends, Case put out country-inspired songs and released a couple albums under that name.

Case moved to Chicago around 2000 due to her distaste for the way local artists were treated in Seattle. In Chicago, Case continued to make music but under her name only, this time. Neko Case has since worked with a number of other artists, such as The Sadies.

Neko Case has not abandoned her country origins--nor does she completely ignore her history with rock, either. Case's sound is tranquilly gloom--most commonly described by her and by music critics as "country-noir". Case's country-influenced vocals are certainly a focal point of her songs, but do not undermine the compatible and extremely relevant instrumentals behind her.
