"Sparklehorse is a rock music group led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Mark Linkous. Essentially, Linkous is Sparklehorse. Linkous records much of Sparklehorse's material in his home studio, and his vision (primarily 'one of haunted beauty', wrote Kevin Caulfield) guides Sparklehorse. Drummer and multi-instrumentalist Scott Minor is a frequent collaborator. Musically, Sparklehorse are not far removed from alt country in its broadest sense -- especially on the band's debut album. The eclectic country-tinged sounds of Howe Gelb or Jim White are somewhat similar to Sparklehorse, and vocal comparisons can be made to Neil Young, Tom Waits and Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips. Linkous is fond of incorporating obsolete musical instruments or technologies in ways reminiscent of some of Tom Waits' music.
Using sounds such as woozy mellotrons, scratchy, distorted wire recordings of his own voice, or cheap, tinny drum machines and often 'distressing' his sound live to recreate these effects. Sparklehorse albums usually offer a couple of full-throttle hard rock numbers, as well, such as 'Some Day I Will Treat You Good' and 'Happy Pig' (recorded in slightly different form as 'Happy Man'). Much of Sparklehorse's music has an introspective, melancholy feel, and the lyrics contain much unusual imagery: Joe Tangari describes Linkous' songs as 'defiantly surrealist...with all manner of references to smiling babies, organ music, birds, and celestial bodies...In fact, some of the lyrics are so surreal that it's hard to imagine they're even metaphors for anything.'. Many of these references are literary or from a variety of rock music sources."
