The Black Keys

The Black Keys are a power duo in the same sense that the Cream was a power trio, less polished for sure, but they just plain sound bigger than what you would expect from such a paltry number of musicians. In fact, the word power aptly describes all parts of their sound from the drumming to the guitar to the voice that can't possibly come from the man you see in album pictures. Seriously, don't look at pictures of these guys before you first hear them. It will cloud your mind. You won't truly hear the music, because you'll be preoccupied with the question "those guys sound like that?"

The guitar you will hear on most Black Keys songs begs to be described as Fat. If you want to get technical, it's also full of yearning. Perhaps the band best describes itself with some of it's song names like "Heavy Soul" and "Thickfreakness." Like all good blues, each note is packed with emotion. And like all good blues guitar, it constantly reminds you of the inseparable connection between playing the blues and rocking. If you waited for years to find someone that could rock like Led Zeppelin and if perhaps you felt that The White Stripes almost got you there, look no further than The Black Keys.

Though their latest albums have been slightly more bluesy and traditional, The Black Keys are always enjoyable and create a sound that's forever on the verge of bursting at the seams. For a true fan of blues-rock (or anything that rocks), it can simply be described as satisfying.
