The Flaming Lips are an indie rock band whose songs are both unusual and incredibly well put together. Squishy-sounds, outer space tones, women's shrieks, outbursts and incomprehensible lyrics are only a few elements of The Flaming Lips' unique yet phenomenal approach. Commonly categorized under "indie rock", The Flaming Lips are much more than that; instead, they are more appropriately described as celestial instrumentalist-poets.

The Flaming Lips formed in Oklahoma City in 1983. After releasing their debut album, Hear It Is and two other albums under indie label Restless Records, The Flaming Lips signed with Warner Bros. in the 1990s. They have won a handful of awards and achieved huge recognition, ranging from Grammy Awards to various hit singles such as "She Don't Use Jelly" and "Fight Test".

Though all of the albums are distinct from the last, The Flaming Lips are able to evolve their style while maintaining the sound that brought them such ginormous success. With their brilliant electronics and unwillingness to do the same ol' thing as so many other indie rock bands, The Flaming Lips are a real force that cannot be ignored by anyone who is interested in the elite circle of tremendously creative rock ensembles.
