Originally composed of a group of musicians from Vancouver, Canada--who each had their own musical career going--The New Pornographers began making music as a band in 1997. Within the group are well known artists, such as Neko Case, and amongst their collaborators are Okkervil River and St. Vincent. Their name comes from a Japanese film called The Pornographers, according to lead singer Carl Newman.

The New Pornographers make incredibly high energy indie pop influenced by pop groups such as The Cars, and older rock legends such as Brian Wilson. Their power pop sound is purely catchy and often gives off a sense of friendliness and a carefree attitude--though their sound is anything but simple. Their tunes combine elaborate pop instrumentals with vocals that certainly do not hold back, to create a flawlessly toe-tapping sound.
