"The Scene: San Francisco's tenderloin district, circa 2001. In an apartment four floors above the street, the Red Light Bandits are clinking bottles in a toast to a successful show at a nearby venue. Among these drunken yet doe-eyed boys are Chris (aka 'Wu') and Jake. Outside, a man smashes Wu's car window and steals two guitars and a bass. In an instant, the band disintegrates; but that's what you get for being too loaded to keep an eye on your instruments. Wu is devastated. He goes home and cries. A lot. Then he writes a bunch of new tunes, determined to start a project involving an all-girl backing band. This plan is made somewhat difficult by the fact that he doesn't know any girls. He turns to that reliable Yente of the 21st century, craigslist.org, and a musical match is soon made. Enter Heather (Lil' Suicide Bunny, Ooh La La), her bass, and her dazzling array of weird instruments.

More arms and legs are needed. After a few attempts to get Jake to wear a wig, the all-girl concept is dropped, and the ex-bandit is officially inducted to the fledgling band as a guitarist. The three begin practicing. There is a knock at the door. It's Wu's new friend, Chris 'Oveis' Oveis. He's very lonely, and carrying a guitar. He's invited in. Marie (Punk Rock Orchestra) shows up the next week with a violin in her hand, and for some reason, she keeps coming back. Mary arrives that same day, with a keyboard, her singing voice, and a dream. The Old-Fashioned Way (as the band is now known) is coming together. Only one piece remains. Matt (The Papercuts, Summer Band) is walking by the practice space one sunny afternoon when he hears the sound of six musicians smashing a drum machine in frustration. 'If only we had a real live drummer!' the band yells in unison. Matt's eyes light up. What do they sound like? Perhaps The National meets The Magnetic Fields meets Belle and Sebastian. Or maybe Leonard Cohen crossed with Arcade Fire and Architecture in Helsinki? The Clash vs. Steven Seagal? Wham?

The Old-Fashioned Way play an exciting new blend of art pop and melancholic dance rock, drawing on a diverse background of experience (members have been in punk and metal bands, a cappella groups, choirs, and orchestras, to name a few), endeavoring to create something new and something fun. And how is the response to their new sound? One person (who may or may not be in the band) has described it as 'awesome', 'amazing', 'totes the next Radiohead', 'sweet', and 'and by sweet i mean totally awesome.' Sounds good to me."
