After so successfully collaborating with Dntel's Jimmy Tamberello on a track called "(This is) The Dream of Evan and Chan", Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie decided to make the duo an official band, which they named The Postal Service. Both on the West Coast (but opposite ends of it: Gibbard from Seattle and Tamberello out of Southern California), The Postal Service formed in 2001. Though relatively close, the location differences between Gibbard and Tamberello sparked their name, for their usage of the U.S. Postal Service was vital to their music's creation.
The Postal Service is an electronic indie pop band that makes incredibly catchy and danceable tracks. Gibbard's familiar voice is comforting but leaks hints of inquisitiveness and exploration. Perhaps best known for their smash hit "Such Great Heights" (which Iron & Wine covered for the Garden State Soundtrack), The Postal Service has released synth pop tracks that are easy-going, nervous and carefully assembled all at the same time. Their sound has won them enormous popularity and the opportunity to collaborate with artists like Jenny Lewis and Rilo Kiley.
