The Shins

The Shins began as the side project of James Russel in the early 1990s, who was at the time a member of post-rock lo-fi band Flake Music. When Flake Music disbanded in the late '90s, Russel switched all his focus to The Shins--which turned out to be be a pretty smart decision on his part. After achieving substantial popularity in their home town of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Russel and his only other band mate Jesse Sandoval added a few more members to The Shins. Like many bands tend to experience however, the lineup of The Shins has changed quite a bit since their birth. Nonetheless, despite their ups and downs even since their beginnings, their signing to Sub Pop Records while on tour with Modest Mouse in 2000 introduced The Shins to the world.

Today, The Shins are arguably one of the founding bands of today's indie pop explosion. They have collaborated with other indie rock icons such as Iron & Wine and have penetrated the mainstream music world after joining Zach Braff's Garden State soundtrack, The OC soundtrack, and the list goes on. However, despite their mainstream fan base, The Shins did not lose their incredibly catchy, ironic and unadulterated style. Their sound is most notably an upbeat and fast paced indie pop influenced by The Beach Boys. Members of The Shins have joined other indie super bands such as Grand Archives and Modest Mouse.
