Their origins lying in the hip-college scenes of Oberlin College and New York University, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs formed in 2000 after lead singer Karen O transferred from the former to the latter university. The members of the band consist of Brian Chase (whom Karen 0 met at Oberlin) and Nick Zinner (who met Karen at a bar in New York). The Yeah Yeah Yeahs originally consisted if just Karen O and Zinner as an acoustic duo. However, the two decided to "amp up" their sound after feeling inspired by the avant-punk style.
The Yeah Yeah Yeas have been deeply involved in (and friends with) the indie rock scene since their on start. In New York, Karen O and Zinner were roommates with the future members of Metric. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs also worked with The White Stripes and The Strokes in the beginning of their career--which not surprisingly helped launch their bursting popularity.
Their sound is substantially lo-fi and garage-y, spilling with glamorous punk styles whose vocals are reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux's deep, strong voice. Karen O sings with mysterious sensuality and their instrumentals are heavy and certainly do not hold back. Despite their heavy style, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are nonetheless extremely danceable and catchy. They've created quite a style that allows you to either listen with respect, or dance 'till you drop (or, do both).
